WITU stands in solidarity with the Guyana Teachers' Union
WITU calls on the Government of Guyana to respect its courts and reinstate the union dues check-off system. An injury to one is an injury to all.
The Windward Islands Teachers' Union (WITU) joins the Caribbean Union of Teachers and education unions throughout the region in standing firmly with the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU).
The continued withholding of the union dues check-off system, despite rulings by Guyana’s High Court and Court of Appeal, threatens the GTU’s ability to represent and defend its members effectively. Respect for workers’ freedom of association, collective representation and access to justice must never be optional.
WITU calls upon the Government of Guyana to respect the decisions of its judiciary and immediately reinstate the deduction and remittance of union dues. When the rights of one union are undermined, the rights of workers everywhere are placed at risk.
To our sisters and brothers of the Guyana Teachers’ Union: you do not stand alone. WITU stands with you in the defence of teachers’ rights, trade union independence and the rule of law.
An injury to one is an injury to all.
